Symphonic Dances (Akron Symphony)

The Akron Symphony Orchestra will highlight the influential work of six women composers/artists during the 2019-20 season as part of the Stand Beside Her project. Stand Beside Her is part of a yearlong recognition of the 100th anniversary of the 19th Amendment, which guarantees and protects women's constitutional right to vote. In honor of the centennial, Masquerade by Anna Clyne, Juba Dance & Finale by Florence Price, and Impressions of Cheonmachong by Kyle and Brooke Jee-in Newmaster, all part of Symphonic Dances has been selected as part of the Stand Beside Her project.

Anna Clyne is a Grammy-nominated composer of acoustic and electro-acoustic music. She served as composer-in-residence for the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, L’Orchestre national d’Île-de-France, and Berkeley Symphony. Clyne currently serves as The Scottish Chamber Orchestra’s Associate Composer.

Undoubtedly, you have heard of suffragists Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Susan B. Anthony, who has a coin named in her honor. You probably have not heard of another woman who was a staunch advocate for women's rights, and was a close friend of Stanton and Anthony. Her name was Amelia Bloomer- and yes, "bloomers" are named after her! Known as a promoter of dress reform, Bloomer noticed the health hazards and restrictive nature of clothing that Victorian women were required to wear, and she pushed for women to adopt a more sensible, new style of dress. The cultural changes wrought by Bloomer and her contemporaries paved the way for a new era of freedoms and rights for women, including the right to vote!

In honor of the centennial, the Made in America by Joan Tower, part of Appalachian Spring has been selected as part of the Stand Beside Her project.

Joan Tower is widely regarded as one of the most important American composers living today. During a career spanning more than 50 years, she has made lasting contributions to musical life in the United States as composer, performer, conductor, and educator, and received the League of American Orchestra’s highest honor, the Gold Baton, in 2019.

Gabriela Lena Frank is currently serving as Composer-in-Residence with the Philadelphia Orchestra and was named one of the 35 most significant women composers in history by The Washington Post in 2017.

In honor of the centennial, The Wreckers Overture by Ethel Smyth, part of Symphonic Shakespeare has been selected as part of the Stand Beside Her project.

Ethel Smyth was a 20th-century British composer and a champion of women’s rights and female musicians. During her lifetime, she composed symphonies, choral works (musical pieces written for a choir), and operas including The Wreckers (1906), and is most well-known for The March of Women, an anthem for the women’s suffrage movement. In 1922, she was named a Dame of the British Empire.

The focus of the 2019 conference is the 100th anniversary of the 19th Amendment.

Soon after its passage in June 1919, and its ratification by the states in August 1920, the voting amendment was interpreted as a broad command for gender equality. However, that trend was quickly reversed, narrowing the impact and intent of the amendment and its 72 years of advocacy.
